Melbourne's Hidden Treasures

Melbourne's Hidden Treasures. Embrace the fun attractions and experiences usually busy with tourists, and help support Melbourne businesses as you do it.

Explore Your Own Backyard

The way we travel has changed for the foreseeable future (maybe even forever!). Now, more than ever, we as travellers are hungry to reconnect with that feeling of awe and discovery that exploring brings — even if it means adventuring into our own backyard. As Australians, we know we have it made when it comes to good weather, beautiful landscapes, and unmatched cultural heritage. And some of the best of it is right here in Victoria.

At Explore Australia, while we love heading out for day trips in the Bellarine and Mornington Peninsula, there’s heaps of things that we love to do in the city centre.

Here’s some of our most favourite spots to explore around town, with easy (and fun!) ways to support them most days of the week. Hidden treasures are around every turn, even at the attractions that make Melbourne who we are.

Once you’ve gotten your fix of city fun, let us at Explore Australia take you on day trips to and from Melbourne to the Bellarine and Mornington Peninsula, where we visit some of the best wineries and breweries on private and small-group tours with all-inclusive tastings and eats.

History & Architecture

ANZ Bank

What was originally a shabby pub, this building was bought for all of £61 during the Marvellous Melbourne period, and transformed into an ornate building that shines inside and out at the corner of Collins and Queens streets.

Royal Arcade

It’s always fun to stop in to see Gog and Magog, Melbourne’s two mythical giants (roughly 7-feet tall each) that have been ringing in the top of the hour since 1892. You’ll find them at the southern entrance of Melbourne’s first shopping arcade.

Art & Indigenous Culture

Presgrave Place

This funky laneway may be short, but there’s heaps of art to look at it: framed gallery-style on the brick walls, and with installations overhead. Go in search of street art, stay for strong coffee and stronger cocktails. Situated in our fashion precinct, this whole stretch captures Melbourne’s style and spirit.

How to get there

Scar Tree Walk

This important Aboriginal site is best experienced with the help of an experience guide from the Koorie Heritage Trust. Along the way, expect to find art, historical sites, and more.

Shopping & Drinks

Rose Street

Some of Melbourne’s best artists and designers congregate here on Saturdays and Sundays, transforming this well-known street into the place to find unique jewellery, paintings, furniture, and much more.

Murmur Piano Bar

Head down Warburton Lane, admiring street art as you keep your ears perked for the faint sound of piano music. You’ll know you’re close to when you see a red neon sign.
