1. Do we ride Puffing Billy and see the penguins on the same day?
Yes — this tour combines two of Victoria’s most iconic experiences in one full day. You will enjoy a scenic 1-hour Puffing Billy steam train ride through the Dandenong Ranges, followed by an evening visit to the Phillip Island Penguin Parade to watch the little penguins return home at dusk.
2. Is the steam train ride included?
Yes, your ticket includes a reserved seat on Puffing Billy. Your ride takes you across the famous Monbulk Creek Trestle Bridge, through lush forest and past fern gullies — a highlight for families and train lovers.
3. What penguin viewing is included?
General Viewing is included as standard. This gives you access to the main boardwalks where you can watch hundreds of penguins make their way back to their burrows. If you prefer a closer or more premium experience, Penguin Plus, Underground Viewing or Guided Penguin Tour can be added at the time of booking or on request and is subject to availability.
4. Do we visit the Nobbies Centre?
Yes — most itineraries include a stop at the Nobbies boardwalks. This is a great chance to explore the dramatic coastline, admire Seal Rocks in the distance and enjoy stunning ocean views before heading to the Penguin Parade.
5. Is dinner included?
Dinner is not included. However, there is free time to purchase meals or snacks in the seaside town of Cowes or at the Penguin Vistors Centre, or guests may bring their own food. This keeps the tour flexible for different dietary needs and budgets.
6. What time does the tour return to Melbourne?
Return times vary based on the season because penguins arrive at dusk. In summer, tours return around 11:00pm–12:00am, and in winter usually around 9:00pm–10:00pm. Your guide will keep you updated throughout the day.
7. How long is the total tour?
This is a full-day experience, generally lasting 12–14 hours. It includes the Puffing Billy journey, free time in Cowes, a visit to the Nobbies and the evening Penguin Parade.
8. Is the tour suitable for children?
Absolutely. Families love this tour, especially the train ride and penguins. The late return time is the only consideration, particularly for younger children — but many families still find it manageable and memorable.
9. What should I bring?
Bring warm layers, comfortable walking shoes, water, snacks and a fully charged camera or phone. Phillip Island can be very windy and cool at night, even in summer, so a jacket is essential.
10. Can I take photos at the Penguin Parade?
No. Photography and videography are strictly prohibited at the Penguin Parade to protect the penguins’ sensitive eyesight. To protect the little penguins, all photgraphy is prohibited after sunset
